Classroom Technology:
For those of you who use the classroom technology; please take the time to read and understand the following guidelines:
Each classroom cabinet contains the following:
- 1 computer with a DVD-ROM drive to play DVD's or CD's. The computer has access to the internet and network.
- 1 VCR or DVD/VCR combination unit
- 3 remotes: a projector remote, a VCR or DVD/VCR remote, and a presentation remote. (Please put the remotes back in the cabinet when you are finished, and make sure to lock it)
- A speaker system
- A classic overhead transparency projector
- Eight of the classrooms have a SMART Sympodium (with pen & software)
- if you are in a classroom with a Sympodium Desk you can connect a laptop into our system.
* If you are using PowerPoint, you can use the presentation remote to control your presentation.
DOs & Don'ts:
- Please turn off the data projector, audio amplifier (if so equipped) and DVD/VCR combination unit when you are finished
- When finished with the computer, please do not log out or turn off the computer
- When leaving make sure the cabinet and area is neat and tidy. Please make sure the remotes are in the cabinet. If you had any media (USB sticks, VHS tapes, DVD's) please remember to take them with you. Remove any other materials you brought with you.
- PLEASE LOCK the cabinet when you are done, this is not only to prevent theft, but also to prevent damage to the equipment from unauthorized users.
Using Technology as a Teaching and Speaking Tool:
There will always be a debate over the pros and cons of using technology as a teaching tool. With these tools one has to always know the best ways to use them:
- Be familiar with any equipment before you present. (Plan ahead)
- Set up before your presentation is scheduled.
- Improve PowerPoint presentations with this guide on Presenting with PowerPoint: 10 dos and don'ts.
- Have a backup plan. Always be prepared for the occasion of equipment malfunction; your USB key might not function correctly, or a web video might not work, etc.
- If you plan on showing a DVD using the PC, understand the DVD keyboard shortcuts, how to mark your starting points, how to fast forward, rewind, pause, etc.
- Use the SMART Sympodium. The Sympodium interactive pen display enables you to effortlessly control any presentation, write over slides in digital ink, save your notes, access any web site or multimedia file, etc. Basically it is a computerized overhead projector built inside the monitor. The computers also come equipped with SMART Notebook Software which can be used in conjunction with the Sympodium to create and deliver interactive lessons and presentations. See SMART Notebook Software Basics.
