Art Department

First-year students begin the curriculum with a foundation of:
  • Introduction to Art (art appreciation)
  • Introduction to Drawing (drawing 1)
  • Introduction to Design
  • Introduction to Painting

Year 2

These foundational studies are expanded in the second year through:
  • Figure Drawing (drawing II)
  • Intermediate Painting
  • Introduction to Sculpture (3-D Design)
Students also take a survey of the History of Western Art in the second year which is completed over two semesters (Ancient to Medieval & Renaissance to Postmodern).

Art students normally take a philosophy course in Aesthetics (PHI 248) as part of their core in the second year.

Year 3

In the third year, art students take studio courses:
  • Computer Art
  • Advanced Painting
  • Advanced Drawing
  • Interdisciplinary Media Studies

They also take advanced level courses in art history and theory which focus on

  • National identity (Canadian)
  • Contemporary historical context (Modern/Postmodern) or
  • Christian worldview (Art and Imagination).
Students may also opt to take an independent study in a medium not included in our regular rotation of studio offerings, or may take courses at the nearby Dundas Valley School of Art  for credit at Redeemer.

Year 4

In the senior year, studio majors prepare an exhibit of work in their area of study. By graduation, art students should demonstrate knowledge of several areas of the visual arts, and depth in one.

Our appreciation of a work of art should not depend on whether it happens to share our worldview. Rather, art is about a shared experience of what it means to be human.
