Natural Regeneration Site

Established in 1990 by Jennifer Chiang, the Natural Regeneration Site is a tract of land that has been set aside by the University to be protected and enhanced as a natural area. Situated in the midst of a rapidly changing landscape of urbanization, this area offers us the opportunity to not only appreciate Creation in terms of its beauty but also in terms of providing an outdoor area for scientific study. Students engaged in the biological sciences here have the opportunity to study the land in a variety of courses such as Introductory Biology, Ecology, Field Biology and Independent Study courses.

The Natural Regeneration is located towards the northwest corner of the Redeemer property and represents an old field succession. It is associated with a headwater tributary to Tiffany Creek. The community is dominated by gray dogwood, red-osier dogwood, black walnut and white oak.

The Whaley Teaching Garden

Established in 2001 by Jennifer Chiang, the Whaley Teaching Garden is open to students, staff, faculty and the community to work in and to enjoy.

The garden is closely located to the main academic building. The garden itself is divided into areas: sensory garden, medieval herb garden, Biblical garden, Shakespeare garden, pond garden, shade garden and wild garden. Each area has been and is in the process of being designed by our botany students.

Since 2001, Redeemer has opened the garden for outdoor instruction. Students in the biology stream are able to conduct a variety of studies, including decomposition, insect collection and soil studies in the garden.

The garden has also been used extensively for our Elementary and High School Science programs offered at Redeemer to local schools and groups.

Redeemer Greenhouse

Redeemer has the luxury of having a rooftop greenhouse which is easily accessible from the main biology laboratories. It provides a compact and unique environment for the growing of plants needed for a variety of biology courses. The greenhouse is well utilized for instructional purposes. For example, students enrolled in plant physiology are able to undertake both long and short term studies on the effects that hormones, nutrients and bacteria play in the development and growth of plants.
