Studies
We offer a 'coverage’ model of study, from the historical beginnings of literature in the 9th century up to the present, because we believe you need to read today in the light of the history of yesterday.
You can choose to take an English major (ten courses), an English minor (six courses), a Writing minor (six courses), or, once you have shown that you are a strong student, a full English Honours program (sixteen courses). You will also be encouraged to take a minor or even a second major in a related discipline, and to benefit in this way from the unique possibilities offered by a liberal arts and science university.
Some of our most popular courses are in Children’s Literature, Literature and the Environment, British Novel, Medieval Literature, Shakespeare, World Literature Written in English, Canadian Historical Fiction, C.S. Lewis and J.R.R. Tolkien, and Creative Writing.
We have a strong focus on Creative Writing, and a Writing Minor for students who would like to concentrate in this area. Our Creative Writing students learn from accomplished writers and have regularly won prizes in the annual North American Christianity and Literature student writing contest. Four students in the last six years have had writing published in writing textbooks while at Redeemer. So far, one graduate has published a book of short fiction.
Several of our courses are also cross-listed with the Theatre Arts Department so you can have the option to focus on dramatic literature.
The
Writing Centre is available both for students who struggle with writing and for students who want to improve already strong writing skills.
Scholarships and Bursaries are available for students registered in the English program. All applicants will be ranked by the Department of English, and the
recipient will be selected by the Academic Standards Committee.
Each year in the English program builds on the previous year’s studies. This is how the program works:
