History Department

Mission Statement

The central goal of the History Department is to promote a global understanding of human history that acknowledges Jesus Christ as King over all creation and all human endeavours, past and present. We seek to uncover how human culture has been and continues to be a response, either Biblical or misdirected, to the search for meaning that characterizes all human societies but can only be met through a relationship with the Saviour of the universe.

History is very much the story of the spiritual battle between light and darkness, a struggle in which historians find themselves deeply engaged. An important starting point for the study of History at Redeemer is the understanding that in recording and interpreting the past, historians are influenced by their own backgrounds and beliefs; historians decide which details are emphasized. Evil not only misdirects humanity through cultural forms but also distorts the production and meaning of historical memory, itself a major shaper of human culture.
