Though rooted in creation, music is a human art: these physical vibrations are composed into a rich array of styles and genres for various purposes by human creatures in response to God’s mandate to exercise dominion and stewardship of the creation. That means we study the craft of music-making in composition and performance throughout the changing panorama of human history. We offer courses in the theory, history and literature of music, including popular styles and music from around the world, and we emphasize group performance and private lessons.
Our Christian perspective leads us to claim that all music activity, like all of life, is religious. While we readily use music of various styles for different functions (entertainment, aesthetic enjoyment, worship, work, etc.), in our view, all kinds of music may be used to glorify God in everyday life or it may be used to praise a false god.
