Studies

Since Redeemer began in 1982, the Department has educated a number of Christians who have gone on to assume leadership in government, business, labour relations, ordained church ministry and the academy all across North America.

The Political Science major and minor will equip you for service by pointing you in two related directions. First, towards the foundations. For two millennia Christians have been reflecting on the nature of political authority and community in God's world. In response to those who would argue that power alone is the currency of politics, we believe that the state has a special responsibility to do public justice, mandated by God to carry out. Accordingly, we offer courses in modern political ideologies and political theory, focusing on the likes of Plato, Augustine, Hobbes, Rousseau and others.

Second, towards an understanding of institutions. Our courses will give you a solid grasp of such important phenomena as constitutions, parliaments, executives and courts in Canada and elsewhere. To have an impact on the political process you will need to know the institutional landscape in which you will be working. Our focus is broadly international with courses addressing Canada, the United States, Europe, Russia and the relationships among states around the world.

The political realm desperately needs, not merely technicians, but educated persons who have a grasp of the big picture. Redeemer provides students with such an education from the perspective of a Christian worldview.
