Mission Statement
Psychologists are interested in why people behave and think as they do. Underlying these interests are fundamental assumptions about what it means to be human. The Psychology Department at Redeemer believes we are created in the image of God. All psychological study, whether clinical or experimental, must be guided by two assumptions. First, that we are a part of the natural world. We are influenced by natural, social and biological factors. And second, we also possess self-awareness and are capable of making choices about our thoughts, feelings and actions. Understanding our development, personalities, social interactions, ability to learn and even our biological make-up requires us to take seriously both these assumptions.
For Professor Stephenson, psychotherapy must focus on helping the person become more mindful and aware, rather than problem solving.
