Internships

An internship and integrative seminar is required for all students who major in Sociology or Sociology/Social Work. You may select from a wide range of placement settings within the Hamilton region, in your hometown or overseas.

Selected locations our students have done internships at:
Internships offer you a great opportunity to apply what you have learned while gaining experience in a field of Social Work of your interest. Internships are usually done in Year 3 or Year 4 and must be approved by the social work professor.

What past students have said about their experiences:

Working with the VAN project was an experience I will never forget. My eyes have been opened to a world I never knew existed. I have learned to care for those that had previously been invisible to me.
               - Reynold van Oord, VAN needle exchange program

I had my internship at Christian Horizons and I worked with the people who have special needs. I learn a lot, especially working with autistic people. It was rewarding because by the end of the internship I was able to understand what the individuals were communicating with their gestures.
               - Ruth Muru, Christian Horizons

Working at an orphanage/adoption agency was a wonderful experience. I worked directly with the orphaned children as well as on adoptions. It was great to learn first hand about the international adoption process as well as what it is like to do social work in a Third World country.
               - Amy Kelly, God's Littlest Angels, Haiti

I absolutely loved my internship placement. I did my internship with a program called Suntrac, which is part of Mission Services Hamilton. I have always had a desire to work in addictions and this gave me a taste of what to look forward to. At my placement I was able to lead treatment groups, connect with clients, make casenotes, prepare the monthly newletter, and many other great projects. I still have a passion for addictions and am able to apply what I learned at Suntrac to working with women who use addictions to cope with abuse.
               - Danielle (Vanderhoek) Zapfe, Suntrac, Mission Services
