Social Work

The Helping Profession

Sociology and Social Work study the familiar and the unfamiliar in social life. It is a helpful way to deepen our understanding of and appreciation for the rich and diverse character of human behaviour lived before God and each other. You are encouraged to understand human social behaviour in the service of others, especially those suffering from serious social, physical, and emotional problems. Learning is for serving.

The Sociology-Social Work major combines the overview of social relations and social problems which sociology studies with the applied intervention strategies of social work. It also borrows from other fields such as psychology and political science, in order to explore all the variables that affect human development.

Social Workers are concerned with social problems, their causes, their solutions and their human impacts. We work with individuals, families, groups, organizations and communities. As a social worker, you will try to understand all the different influences that shape a person. By addressing the person in this larger context, you will be better equipped to intervene on an individual, community, and on a policy level. Focusing on the dignity and worth of every person, as well as on respect for individual differences, you will develop a love for others, a desire for justice, and a profound appreciation for the rich and diverse character of human behaviour.

Human rights and social justice are the philosophical underpinnings of social work practice. The uniqueness of social work practice is in the blend of some particular values, knowledge and skills, including the use of relationship as the basis of all interventions and respect for the client’s choice and involvement.

In thousands of ways, social workers help people help themselves. People of every age, from every background and in every corner of the country need our help right now. Help starts here.
