Understanding Society

Have you ever wondered: Why does poverty exist in Canada? Why do people commit crimes? Is virtual culture beneficial or harmful to us? These are all questions that Sociology tries to answer.

Sociology is the discovery and interpretation of patterns of human social life, the exploration of how societies work and why people act, think and believe as they do within them. We provide a distinctive program in Sociology as part of a cutting-edge liberal arts education in order to help you develop an in-depth understanding of our world.

Sociologists have studied, for example, issues of disability, poverty, homelessness, street gangs, prostitutes, organized crime, prisons, communes, and religious sects. Researchers have provided insight and information into the inner life of such groups, which is often inaccessible to the great majority of people.

The study of sociology is important and useful for anyone who wants to understand how our behaviour and thinking are shaped by the social groups in which we live. Your studies will have a strong emphasis on social justice and service to the 'least of these'.
