Theatre Arts Department
Mission Statement

The Theatre Arts Department explores the dramatic expression of the human condition. We acknowledge that this exploration is not free of worldview assumptions and so we openly embrace a Christian view of reality as it is laid out in Scripture.

All that the theatre artist uses to make theatre has been made, or made possible, by God who has created time, movement, light, darkness, texture and sound. He has made people with unique, complex personalities and equally complex emotional lives to exist in the context of a creation built with these elements. He has created people with the desire to explore - to play with these various facets of creation - so that they might come to know their world, and its Creator more intimately. Sin distorts this relationship. Drama tells the story of the results of this.

Theatre is the imaginative reshaping of time, character and human action to form a play or a performance event. It is a communal activity that brings artists and audience together. In classroom teaching and in production, these assumptions undergird the work that we do.

Students who graduate with a theatre arts major or minor may go on to graduate school, teaching posts at the elementary and secondary levels as well as to the professional theatre. Some take the speech, movement, technical and interpersonal skills they have acquired and move into completely different areas of society.
