How do I appeal a policy about courses or exams? / How do I make myself heard?

First of all, please feel free to either drop by the Registrar’s Office and ask to see someone or book an appointment. Simply explain what your questions are and we’ll do our best to explain the policy to you. It’s the job of the Registrar’s Office to apply the academic policies (registration, program requirements, admission to majors/programs and general academic regulations) of the institution fairly – and to ensure that these policies are communicated clearly. If you have a situation involving a course, you are encouraged to discuss this with your professor first – we are happy to listen and advise if you need a sounding board prior to doing that.

If you still feel that the explanation is not satisfactory or that the policy itself is unfair, applied unfairly in your situation, or that you have grounds for an exception, write a letter of appeal. This letter can be given to the Assistant Registrar, Mrs Linda Branton, and depending on the nature of the issue, she will either reply directly or forward it on to the appropriate committee chair person (normally either the Academic Affairs Committee or the Academic Program and Policy Committee). We take all letters of appeal seriously and will reply as soon as possible.

Finally, familiarize yourself with the Student Grievances policy as outlined in the Academic Calendar.
