Our Mission Statement
The Writing Centre is committed to providing one-to-one instruction on the components of the writing process: understanding the assignment, organizing ideas, outlining and drafting, revision, and documentation.
Our focus is on helping students to interact thoughtfully with the words they have put down on the page by asking questions about the structure, style, and meaning of students’ writing. Our goal is to help writers to engage in the writing process with confidence in their own abilities. We do not proofread, but we do take time to help students understand and identify consistently made grammatical and punctuation errors.
The peer tutors at the Writing Centre are skilled critical thinkers who are trained in pedagogical techniques, writing rules and standards, and the various writing requirements of different disciplines. Everyone who works here seeks to welcome all students who walk into the Writing Centre, to put them at ease concerning the quality of their work, and to encourage them with gentle suggestions to improve their writing. We will consider at all times the words of the Apostle Paul:
“Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen.”
Ephesians 4:29
