Brus Takes Home Provincial Bronze Medal
February 20, 2010
Windsor, Ontario
This weekend Redeemer was represented by Randall Brus at the OCAA
Provincial Championships in Badminton. This was Redeemer's first year
competing in Badminton in 2 decades. After finishing 3rd in the West
region two weekends ago, Brus travelled to St. Clair College in Windsor for the
Friday/Saturday tournament this weekend. Randall began the
tournament with a win over Humber's Dustin Mitchell. After dropping decisions
to Dayvon Reid and Gurkinrandeep Singh, Brus earned another victory in his
match with Derik Jakola of Seneca. He finished his round robin with a loss to Timothy Chiu, but it was enough to earn him a spot in the semi-finals
with a 4th place finish in round robin.

After losing to eventual Gold medal winner in the semi-final, Brus won the best 2 of 3 match against Gurkirandeep Singh (of
Georgian College) 13-21, 21-13, 21-13 to earn Redeemer an OCAA Bronze
medal!
This is truly an unbelievable result, but one that Randall worked
extremely hard for. A gifted athlete, Randall also has a heart of gold
and showed great sportsmanship and competitive toughness during the
tournament. Congratulations also go to the coach Jack
Wang for his work with the team this year.

Varsity Badminton Has Arrived!
Royals have hit the court for 2009-2010 season
Redeemer University College and the Redeemer Royals are proud to announce that badminton has been added as a Varsity sport and has arrived for the 2009-2010 OCAA season. Badminton has joined the already existing Cross Country, Basketball, Volleyball, and Soccer Varsity programs offered at Redeemer.
At one time, Badminton was a varsity program at Redeemer but was removed after the 1992-1993 season. Now, after a 15 year absence, the Royals have returned to the court and are competing for their shot at an Ontario College Provincial Medal.
After testing the waters last season at a number of open tournaments, the Royals are going full speed this season in order to get the program off the ground in it's first year. Adding a badminton program has been a topic of discussion for a number of years now as the sport is very popular at the High School level and the Royals Athletic Department is excited to see it set to take off in the fall.
