RESEARCH INTERESTS

  • My primary area of research has been in Hermeneutics (Theological, Historical and Philosophical). My first book, Rendering the Word in Theological Hermeneutics: Mapping Divine and Human Agency is the main fruit of this. Gathering together some common themes from the work of Nicholas Wolterstorff, Karl Barth, John Webster, Charles Taylor, George Lindbeck and Hans Frei, I have created a two dimensional typology consisting of three types in a hermeneutical space represented by a triangle. I survey examples of each type demonstrating the way they negotiate the dynamic of human and divine agency. Those whose work I discuss include those named above as well as Kevin Vanhoozer, Francis Watson, David Kelsey, Werner Jeanrond, Stephen Fowl, and James K. A. Smith.
  • I am currently working on my second book in this field tentatively titled: Reading in the Trinity: The Character of the Theological Interpretation of Scripture; a proposal for theological hermeneutics located within the agency and purview of the Trinity. Both Brazos and Eerdmans press have expressed interest in publishing it.
  • I am also in early stages of two other research programs. The first: on the significance of the heavenly session of Christ for Christology, Ecclesiology, Bibliology and Theological Hermeneutics. I have a partial rough draft of the first two chapters of this book (as two distinct parts of the paper delivered at St. Andrews in 2006 listed below) and am gathering and reading primary and secondary materials in preparation to outline and complete the remaining chapters.
  • My other long term project is a textbook on theological method which draws on primary text readings available freely on the internet. I and am developing this book in relation to my course on theological method.
