One eighth of the world's population does not have access to safe water. Every six seconds a child dies because of hunger and related causes. Over 27 million people worldwide are living as slaves. Every year more than 2 million children are exploited through sex trafficking. Over 15 Million children live as orphans because AIDS has killed their parents. Over 11% of Canadians live below the poverty line. An estimated 32,000 people are homeless in the Greater Toronto Area alone.
So, what are we going to do about it? How can we address social injustice in a society that has been built on the backs of the poor? How can be use our priviledge to aid in the liberation of the oppressed? What is the Church's role?
On January 23, 2010 Redeemer's Social Justice team will be hosting the 3rd Annual Faith & Social Justice Conference. There, we will have the opportunity to address these issues from a Christian perspective, learn from experts in the field, and engage in a movement toward a just society.
Our plenary speaker will be Dr. Anne-Marie Zajdlik, a family doctor and AIDS physician from Guelph. Dr. Zajdlik is the founder of the 'Bracelet of Hope' campaign that has successfully raised $1 million dollars for a health clinic in Lesotho, Africa. Workshops will be held from representatives from organizations such as Habitat for Humanity, Project 417, Opportunity International Canada, SoChange, Jamie Moffett Media, The Dam, and more. In conjunction with the conference, on Friday evening Stephen Lewis will be giving a lecture on the topic of Global Health, followed by a panel discussion.
