My name is (Dr.) Syd Hielema, and I have the privilege of serving as Redeemer’s chaplain. My work here is divided into four basic categories:
  • I work with a student leadership team to plan and lead chapel every week. We work hard to lead worship that is relevant to campus life and provides a time of Sabbath rest from the busy academic schedule.
  • I meet with students, faculty and staff one-on-one to discuss any matter that needs discussion. Life is filled with challenges, amazing opportunities, heavy burdens and confusing questions, and I know how helpful it can be to have a safe place to talk through whatever matters may be dominating our hearts.
  • I partner with others to plan and carry out all kinds of programming on campus, including small group ministry, Church in the Box, social justice week (and the social justice conference), the annual worship conference, monthly chaplain desserts, and sexuality discussions. During the university years we mature in many different ways, and therefore we seek to provide programming that addresses many dimensions of life.
  •  I teach one course per term in the Religion department. These courses include REL 201, Academic Study of Scripture, REL 326, the Gospels and Acts, REL 327, the Pauline Epistles.

My four areas of work often overlap in wonderful ways. For example, a student taking the Pauline epistles may decide to lead a Bible study on Ephesians. As the group studies Ephesians, one student realizes that she is deeply struggling with a particular issue mentioned by Paul, and she comes to discuss this issue with me. As we discuss it, I realize that her issue is one that is shared by many students, so we plan a chapel on that theme.

The Holy Spirit has a wonderfully random way of making connections, and thereby demonstrating God’s sovereign way of working through our humble efforts.
