Redeemer University College is committed to helping students with disabilities reach their full academic potential. By offering a variety of services and resources, we are able to support and encourage students so that they may achieve their academic and personal goals.

What is a Special Need?
Special needs are documented disabilities which have been assessed by a third party professional. The list includes:
- Learning disabilities
- Attention-deficit disorders
- Vision disabilities
- Physical disabilities
- Hearing disabilities
- Medical disabilities
- Emotional/psychological disabilities

Accommodations

Together with the student, we plan accommodations that fit the disability. The purpose of an accommodation is to allow the student with a disability to learn and be evaluated on a level playing field with other students. Accommodations do not fundamentally change the requirements or affect the integrity of the academic standard of the program. Request for specific accommodations need to match the identified need.

Types Of Accommodations
Accommodations that have been used in the past include but are not limited to:
- Extra time to write tests and exams, where the need is clearly supported by documentation
- Quiet exam space
- Use of a computer for exams
- Note taking support
- Text books in alternate format
- Alternate formats including use of adaptive technology such as Dragon naturally speaking, JAWS, Zoom Text and Kurzweil
- use of a scribe
- use of a tape recorder
- Special Advising
- Tutoring
- Assistance in arranging for diagnostic testing.  A referral would be made to an outside agency for a Psycho-educational Assessment at the student's expense
- Assistance in arranging for counselling. Redeemer has a number of counsellors on campus, but a referral could also be made to an outside psychologist or counsellor
- Advice and assistance in understanding the Bursary for Students with Disabilities for students on OSAP
