During this presentation for Redeemer students,Ken Heffner will look at the theology of popular culture. The problem is worse than we thought, and is also better than we thought. All music is has elements of the creation, fall, redemption in it. Our call is to learn to discern all music. Practical examples and listening will take place.

The Christian community has struggled with either condemning anything coming from “secular” pop culture or treating it as a commodity for which we should have little concern. What does it mean to listen deeply to music and to discern what is good and bad about it?

The New Music Model: Practical Strategies for the DIY Independent Musician (Scott Orr) Discussion and practical strategies on how to take control of your musical career with do-it-yourself applications. We will touch on subjects like music licensing to film/tv, social media, economics of physical/digital media, and will discuss the overall ideal model for current independent musicians.

Ken Heffner:
Ken Heffner is the director of Student Activities at Calvin College and the director of the Festival of Faith and Music. Among others, the concert season he founded at Calvin College has featured Dave Matthews Band, the Indigo Girls, Sufjen Stevens, and the Decemberists. He speaks at conferences and colleges across North America about the topic of discerning culture as Christians.
Graham Rockingham:
Graham Rockingham has been covering the Hamilton music scene for the past
nine years for the Hamilton Spectator. During that time, he's been named HMA
Media Person of the Year three times as well as won an
Ontario Newspaper Award for entertainment writing. During his 30+ year
career in newspapers, Rockingham has held a variety of reporting and
editing positions for The Vancouver Sun, The Vancouver Province and United
Press International. Rockingham also writes a monthly column on music for FYI magazine and teaches a rock 'n' roll history course at Mohawk College. He is a co-founder of the B.C. Newspaper Awards and serves as a judge for the Atlantic Newspaper Awards. This year Rockingham served as a member of the grand jury for the $30,000 Polaris Prize for Canadian album of the year.
Jonathan Baker:
Jonathan Baker is an accomplished Canadian jazz pianist who boasts a formidable and diverse musical expertise. After having trained classically for twelve years and graduating from a music rich secondary school, Jonathan studied jazz performance at the prestigious University of Toronto, learning from Juno award winning artists David Braid and Brian Dickinson. Before graduating with honours in 2003, Jonathan gained special recognition from the community for his compositional ability and highly competent aural skills. Soon thereafter Jonathan felt moved to head out East, to undertake a degree in ministry from St. Stephen's University. While there he trained under acclaimed worship recording artist and philosopher Dan Wilt, and gained his worship leading ability, studio recording & production skills, and connections throughout the international worship community. Several years later Jonathan returned to U of T for a degree in education, and has since taught music at both the primary and secondary levels in both Ontario and New Brunswick. Jonathan has also taught private lessons in piano and guitar for nearly a decade. As a jazz specialist, he teaches improvisation and worship musicianship with great creativity and prowess, as well as classical piano, aural skills, and general musicianship. Jonathan currently reside in Brantford, Ontario, and serves as a worship leader at the Cambridge Vineyard.
Scott Orr (Workshop leader on Saturday)
Scott Orr is in charge of Artist & Repertoire for Hamilton indie label, Other Songs Music Co. At OSMC, he has released over 15 albums and has managed the press, production and manufacturing of each release. The record label won Record Label of the Year at the 2011 Hamilton Music Awards and has received music placement with CMT, Degrassi, MuchMusic and Simon & Schuster. Scott has also spent the last 6 years working in product development for retailers where he has created content for products that are available worldwide in Walmart, Barnes & Noble, Amazon, HMV, and Art.com.
Other Songs Music Co. is currently prepping the release of a new book this year titled, "40 Do-It-Yourself Tips For Independent Musicians: Industry Advice That Works", the book will be available at retailers worldwide and on Kindle, iBooks and Nook.
