Session One Workshops

The Art of Worship Team Leadership - Part I of III
Your church has a worship team, but how do you help them reach the next level? This intensive training includes instruction in the role of the worship team, vocals and vocal harmony, guitar, piano, bass, drums, putting all the instruments together, and a demonstration rehearsal. The curriculum is aimed toward team leaders, but anyone who is on a worship team or hopes to lead one in the future will benefit.
Greg Sheer and Paul Ryan
Worship Planning: The Weekly Grind
How do you “put together” a service each week? What principles guide your choices? How do you stay “fresh” in the week-to-week grind of planning music, words, visuals? Come and see if these questions can be answered!
Ruth Ann Schuringa
Powerpoint Design
In this workshop, participants will learn some basic design principles to create successful, legible and visually pleasing powerpoint presentations to use in worship.
Petra Zantingh & Julia Soderholm
Children & Worship
Discover practical ways to inspire children to truly participate in worship. Through examining the various learning styles, learn how to creatively engage children in worship whether in a classroom setting or a congregational worship service.
Amber Smith
Finding Your Voice
This interactive workshop will focus on the voice: how to strengthen and develop your voice, maintain good vocal health, approach different styles of vocal music and working together with other vocalists, particularly in a worship setting.
Patrick and Lisa Timney
The Artist as Leader in Spiritual Community
This is an exploration of challenges involved in reintegrating artistic gifting with congregational leadership and management practice. It is also an attempt to reclaim at least part of a Biblical Levitical model for artists in church life; in worship, education, therapy and mission.
James Tughan
Designing Worship as a Compelling Narrative
Worship reenacts the story of God. Therefore, week by week, worship planners have opportunity to infuse their worship with a creative and imaginative rendering of the greatest story ever told.
Glenn Soderholm
The Book of Psalms: An Invitation to the Way of Life
For millennia the Psalms have provided the basis of worship and life in the community of those who fear the Lord, first for Israel and later for the Church. This workshop will introduce the structure and diversity of the Book of Psalms and look at the individual psalms. Further time will be spent exploring how to integrate the divine wisdom of this book into our worship and individual lives.

The Experience of Congregational Singing
In all the discussion about worship and music, the perspective of the congregational singer is often overlooked. This session will discuss many of the assumptions we bring to our planning for communal singing. Perhaps there are questions we have not asked and should be addressed that will make musical worship more significant for participants.
Gordon Adnams
Paper Banners – Part I
Artistic expression is an important part of worship and God calls us to engage in it, whether as professionals or amateurs, and to do so with joy and originality. In this workshop, participants will design and produce paper lace by using photographic backdrop paper. Positive and negative images are drawn on the paper using a projector, and then carefully cut. These ethereal works are designed to hang and float and will be incorporated into the time of worship.
Petra Zantingh
Worship By Youth For Youth
James is going to share some inspiring stories and stupid mistakes from his experience of leading worship bands while he was in high school and beyond. He’ll talk about how to lead more effectively, what kinds of things you want to pay attention to when you plan, how to run rehearsals, and how this effects what you do with the music
James Bloemendal
Worshiping Through Grief and Loss
Robb Powell will offer reflections on lessons learned through grieving the tragic loss of his eldest son, David, in December. These lessons, applied to worship, will be helpful for those who have struggled with crushing loss and disappointment. They are pertinent both for the listener and for those he/she may lead in worship.
Robb Powell
Red Moon Rising: Learning to Pray Creatively
We need to challenge and inspire people to pray! In the church we have seen a revolution in what our musical worship looks like but not in how we pray. During the session we will look at how to inspire congregations to pray in creative ways. We will look at ideas for creative prayer times in small groups but also during Sunday morning services.

Reviving and Renewing the Choral Experience
This seminar will focus on ways to breath life back into the joy of choral singing in the our local churches.  We will talk about recruitment strategies, rehearsal techniques, blending choral music with contemporary worship music, good literature for the average church choir, and special presentations. Expect to sing some as well!
Paul Thorlakson
Worship and Human Emotion
Human emotion plays a profound role in Christian worship, but this role is very complex and easily misunderstood. What is the role of human emotion in our walk with God, and how do we as worship leaders obediently honour that role? What temptations to abuse emotion do we experience? How might we guide congregations to both emotional freedom and emotional maturity?
Syd Hielema
Integrating Old and New Music
This seminar focuses on the art of creatively integrating contemporary worship songs with traditional hymns in ways that bring meaning and freshness to both and to our corporate intergenerational worship experience. Come prepared to participate in abbreviated versions of songs and song combinations as ideas are demonstrated. Lots of take-home ideas and transferable concepts.
Wendy Porter
More than Just Words- Liturgy, Readings, Drama and Video
How can worship engage a congregation to search for deeper meaning? How can a congregation participate in worship words? In this workshop, we’ll examine concrete ways to make the call to worship, the confession and assurance, the reading of the Word, the response and the blessing more meaningful to a congregation.
