The Position: 

Redeemer University seeks a dynamic and strategic leader to oversee and direct the Redeemer Royals Hockey program. The General Manager will provide comprehensive leadership, organizational oversight, and long-term planning to ensure sustained success both on and off the ice.

This role requires an individual who can align program operations with Redeemer’s mission and Vertical Purpose, fostering a Christ-centered culture that develops student-athletes in competition, character, and faith. The General Manager will work collaboratively with the Director of Athletics, coaching staff, and institutional partners to lead a program marked by excellence in Christian service, competition, academics, and leadership.

Responsibilities:

The responsibilities of the successful candidate will include, but are not necessarily limited to:

Leadership & Oversight

  • Provide overall leadership and direction for the hockey program, setting the tone for culture, accountability, and alignment with the department’s mission and Vertical Purpose.
  • Oversee coaches, team personnel, and support staff, ensuring clarity of roles, expectations, and performance standards.
  • Foster a positive, faith-driven, and competitive team environment that reflects the values of Redeemer University.

Recruitment & Scouting

  • Oversee recruitment strategies to identify, evaluate, and secure prospective student-athletes who align with the University’s mission and program standards.
  • Ensure ongoing scouting and evaluation of player performance and potential, both within and outside the program.
  • Work collaboratively with Admissions and Athletics staff to support recruitment events, visits, and pipelines.

Strategy & Program Development

  • Develop and implement long-term competitive and developmental strategies in collaboration with the Director of Athletics.
  • Support athlete development through mentorship, training opportunities, and spiritual growth initiatives.
  • Plan for future seasons, including roster development, staffing needs, and equipment cycles.

Operations & Administration

  • Oversee budgeting and financial planning related to team operations, including equipment, travel, and program expenses.
  • Coordinate scheduling, including practices, games, facility usage, and seasonal planning.
  • Plan and manage team travel for all away competitions and tournaments.
  • Ensure compliance with all league, institutional, and academic eligibility requirements (UNYCHL/AAU and Redeemer policies).

Communication & Representation

  • Serve as the primary liaison between Athletics administration, coaching staff, student-athletes, and external partners.
  • Represent the hockey program in media, community engagement, and sponsor relations.
  • Communicate clearly and consistently with all stakeholders to support program alignment and success.

Evaluation & Continuous Improvement

  • Monitor team and staff performance, conducting evaluations and year-end reviews in collaboration with the Director of Athletics.
  • Implement systems for ongoing assessment and improvement of program operations and athlete experience.

Spiritual Leadership

  • Support and promote opportunities for spiritual development within the program in alignment with the department’s Vertical Purpose.
  • Encourage a culture where student-athletes grow as followers of Christ and represent Him through their sport and daily lives.

Preferred Skills and Attributes: 

  • Strong leadership, organizational, and strategic planning abilities.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple operational areas with attention to detail.
  • Knowledge of hockey operations, player development, and league regulations.
  • Demonstrated ability to contribute to a Christ-centered team culture.

Other Requirements:

  • Understanding of Redeemer University (mission, values, and Reformed Christian identity)
  • Ability and desire to work collaboratively within a team-oriented Athletics Department.
  • Flexibility to work varied hours throughout the year, including evenings and weekends as required.

Education/Training:

  • Post-secondary education is preferred, combined with relevant experience in sport management, coaching, or hockey operations.
  • Experience in hockey program leadership, scouting, or administration is considered an asset.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage budgets, operations, and personnel effectively.
