Executive Summary Report for the review of the Environment Science, Environmental Studies, and Geography program – 2023/2024
As part of Redeemer’s institutional quality assurance process, the Environmental Science, Environmental Studies, and Geography faculty completed a Self‐Study Report of the Environmental programs in September 2023. A review team composed of two external and one internal reviewer performed a visit over several dates in April 2024, meeting with students, faculty, and relevant support staff and senior administration. The review team submitted a final External Reviewers’ Report on May 24, 2024.
The review of Redeemer University’s Environmental Science and Environmental Studies programs commends their alignment with Christian stewardship, practical learning through resources like the Whaley Teaching Garden, and interdisciplinary curriculum supported by faculty expertise. Partnerships, such as with the Au Sable Institute, enhance students’ field experience. Opportunities include expanding fieldwork throughout the curriculum and introducing courses in geology and aquatic sciences; there may also be further opportunities to market the program more widely. Recommendations include introducing a BA Honours degree in Environmental Studies, streamlining program options for clarity, and adding more electives and field-based courses to support student and industry needs.
Based on their Response, approved on November 4, 2024, the Environmental Science, Environmental Studies, and Geography faculty and Redeemer administration have carefully considered the External Reviewers’ Report and prepared a concrete plan, with a timeline, to strengthen the program in response to the recommendations. This plan has been approved by the Academic Quality Assurance Committee and Redeemer’s Senate.
