Reporting to the President, serving as Vice Chair of the Senate and as a member of the President’s Council, the Provost, and VP, Academic (Provost from here onward) is the chief officer of the University’s educational programs. S/he will assist the President in executing Redeemer’s mission and will bring a comprehensive vision for university learning and student development where faith, life, and learning are vitally connected.
As the chief academic officer, the Provost will also provide crucial leadership in building an effective academic administration with a cohesive partnership between curricular and co-curricular programs, activities, and staff.
Deeply rooted in the Reformed Christian tradition as an institution, Redeemer takes its faculty, staff, and students from a wide variety of cultural and Christian denominational backgrounds. As someone who affirms and celebrates a Reformed worldview, the Provost must have the ability to cultivate unity amidst this diversity while claiming the Lordship of Jesus Christ over all creation, the authority of Scripture, and our calling to personal discipleship.
The Provost will integrate the Reformed worldview into a well-developed vision for Christian post-secondary liberal arts and sciences education and be able to express this unique vision to diverse audiences, both internal and external. S/he will know and embrace Redeemer’s history and its distinctive place in the Ontario and wider post-secondary landscape and have the ability and enthusiasm both to tell Redeemer’s story and to expand its impact.
A clear understanding of the context and changing nature of post-secondary education, particularly in Canada today, is essential to this role. The Provost will apply that knowledge with forward-looking insight and innovation to advance Redeemer’s educational mission. This includes promoting excellence in research, teaching, and learning, and mentorship; strengthening connections between curricular programs, experiential learning, and Student Life programs; and forging partnerships with our wider community.
In order to build Redeemer’s academic administration, the Provost will have a proven track record of excellent academic leadership. S/he will have experience successfully managing and directing faculty, including team-building. S/he will also have experience developing, enriching, renewing, and assessing academic programs. On an executive level, s/he will be able to contribute meaningfully to or lead important work in strategic planning and complex budgeting.
In all things, integrity and collegiality are vital qualities as the Provost builds relationships; communicates widely; and nurtures a community characterized by care, transparency, accountability, collaboration, service, and academic excellence.
- An earned PhD or equivalent terminal degree
- Experience in managing/directing faculty and academic administration at the dean level or higher
- Familiarity with current trends in post-secondary education in Canada and North America
- A forward-looking vision for Reformed university learning
- Experience with program development and assessment
- A passion for faculty development including assessing and promoting teaching and scholarship
Lastly, the Provost will bring to the task a living and active personal faith in Jesus Christ as Saviour and Lord, and a thoughtful, articulate commitment to Redeemer’s Mission, Vision, and Statement of Basis and Principles.

The Provost has faculty status and the opportunity to teach at least one course every other year. S/he serves as the chief administrative officer as directed by the President in his/her absence and is appointed for a five-year renewable term. Salary to be determined, commensurate with qualifications and experience.
Process of Candidacy
A Provost Search Committee has been appointed by the President, and is comprised of representatives from various segments of the Redeemer community.
Though the starting date is negotiable, ideally the new Provost will assume the office no later than July 1, 2019.
