Through a careful reading of selected poetry, and criticism by T.S. Eliot against the cutural backdrop of the hopes and failures of the early 20th-century Europe, we will chart the development of Eliot's thinking and writing. We will be especially attuned to Eliot's religious sensibility before and after his conversion to Anglo-Catholicism in 1927. To this end, we will be paying particular attention to The Waste Land and Four Quartets as the works most evocative to Eliot's posture regarding faith. This is a seminar course in which students will be required to participate regularly with presentations, dicussions and response papers.
