777 Garner Road East Ancaster ON L9K 1J4
Join Redeemer on March 5 for a free public lecture hosted by the Albert M. Wolters Centre for Christian Scholarship. This is the third lecture in the 2024-2025 Wolters Lecture Series. The Centre is pleased to host Dr. Abby Foreman, a visiting scholar in the field of social sciences.
Dr. Foreman is a professor of social work, director of the master of public administration program, and also serves as dean for the social sciences at Dordt University. She has a PhD in political science and public administration from the University of South Dakota, a master’s degree in social work from the
University of Michigan, and a bachelor’s degree in social work from Dordt. Prior to teaching, Abby served as an organizer for Bread for the World, working to equip church and faith-based college groups to advocate on hunger and food insecurity policy. She is interested in exploring the relationship between
government and civil society in responding to social problems and the needs of vulnerable groups.
Executive Dining Room (EDR), March 5, 7:30 – 9 p.m.
This lecture explores the history and development of social welfare responses to modern-day challenges and how competing narratives about responsibility and agency shape our understanding today. How can the concept of principled pluralism, as articulated by Abraham Kuyper and others, offer a framework for considering diverse mechanisms for addressing social welfare responses in a diverse public square? Biblical principles on caring for the least of these provide the foundation for what ‘ought to be;’ there is room for new ideas, new partnerships and innovation as we follow God’s call to love our neighbour.
