Sympathy for Jonah

A musical retelling of the Book of Jonah with David Blower.

Sympathy for Jonah retells the grim story of the Bible’s most miserable prophet through a collection of Waits-esque dirges, plunging beyond the usual children’s morality tale and into the violent politics of the Neo-Assyrian empire that terrorised the world from Nineveh. And now that Nineveh (or Mosul, as it is called today) is once again occupied by a brutal and terrifying regime, Jonah’s calling to the radical politics of enemy-love must be reconsidered.

This even will take place in the Redeemer Art Gallery. There will be a free will offering.

David Benjamin Blower is a musician, writer, 6-string theologian and town-crier from Birmingham in the UK.. He’s the founder of the junk-folk protest band The Army of the Broken Hearted and has eight records out on the Minor Artists label. His forthcoming record “Welcome the Stranger” addresses the refugee crisis head on. He will be touring bars, churches and lounges over the coming year, giving readings from his second book Sympathy for Jonah, and performing his junk-folk musical of the maritime prophet’s tale.
