Abstract

The value of the diaspora cannot and should not be limited or relegated to economic advancements and remittances only. This is by no means disparaging the African diaspora’s economic value. However, there is more to be done, particularly in terms of long-term development and the advancement of the African continent. This paper attempts to thread discussions around how the African diaspora can change the negative narratives and portrayals of the continent, advance an African-led development course, and inspire good leadership/followership trends on account of experiences that forge the identity of the African diaspora. The African diaspora carries their ethnic and cultural identities, which help them maintain links to their homeland. Categorising the African diasporic identity as monolithic proves challenging because of the complexity of identity. For this reason, the African diasporic identity in the context of this paper is disaggregated into several parts to make it more understandable. We also contend that the African diaspora can take the frontiers of technology and innovative advances exemplified by AKON CITY, a project similar to the futuristic Wakanda city in the Black Panther movie. We argue that there is more to what the African diaspora can offer in mentoring/role-modeling, economic advancement, and political pressure for governance/accountability.
