Redeemer University is celebrating a new enrolment record this fall, surpassing the 1,100 student mark for the first time in its history with a total of 1,117 students. This milestone is fueled by a strong incoming class of 360 new students. Redeemer’s student body has grown significantly since its founding, from just 160 students in 1982 to a previous all-time high of 955 in 2010. After a period of decline, the university has experienced steady growth for most of the last eight years, building to this new record.

Redeemer’s thriving campus community has also reached new heights with a record 585 students choosing to live in residence this year. The vibrant, faith-integrated community continues to be a significant draw for students seeking an authentic and purposeful university experience.

“It’s exciting to see the Redeemer community continue to grow and attract new students as we pursue expanded programming, all while keeping tuition comparable to other universities in Ontario,” says president Dr. David Zietsma. “We remain committed to offering a Christian university education that prepares students to reflect the love of Jesus Christ in every career and calling.”

The university continues to attract a diverse and well-rounded student body with students coming from all 10 Canadian provinces. International students also represent 27 different countries, with the largest contingents coming from the U.S., Nigeria and Brazil. The student body also represents more than 55 different church denominations.

It’s exciting to see the Redeemer community continue to grow and attract new students as we pursue expanded programming, all while keeping tuition comparable to other universities in Ontario.

Beyond the record-breaking numbers, the incoming class contributes to the ongoing balancing of the male-to-female ratio. In 2020, female students made up over 65 percent of the student body. Gradually over the past five years it is becoming more even, with male students making up 42 per cent of the student body this year. 

The university’s enrolment growth is particularly notable within the current higher education landscape, where many institutions in Canada are facing challenges with international student caps and a gradual domestic student enrolment decline.

The steady growth at Redeemer reflects a wider trend in North America that other Christian universities are experiencing. “We’re seeing a desire from students and families for a university education that is biblically faithful,” says associate vice president, enrolment Meghan Taylor. “Redeemer offers a place where academic excellence is inextricably linked with spiritual growth.”
