Dr. Diane Dent, Outreach Director, Pascal Centre and Assistant Professor of French, has been awarded a Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal, which honours significant contributions and achievements by Canadians. His Worship Bob Bratina, Mayor of Hamilton, presented the medal to Dr. Dent in recognition of her 40 years of work in preserving Hamilton’s architectural heritage. Her work in this area began in 1972 when she founded the Durand Neighbourhood Association, and through that prevented the demolition of some of Hamilton’s finest housing stock. She served on and was chair of the Local Architectural Conservation Advisory Committee from 1986-2007. Through this time, she ensured the preservation of many of Hamilton’s historical buildings. Dr. Dent’s work was not just in preventing the destruction of Hamilton’s architectural heritage, she has been instrumental in creating community spaces throughout the city, including a neighbourhood park in the city centre. There is also a certain amount of personal satisfaction for her as well. “I am just thrilled to have received the medal,” says Dr. Dent. “It recognizes the societal importance of heritage preservation to the culture of the City of Hamilton. This is another in a long line of awards that Dr. Dent has received for her work in Hamilton. She has received the Lieutenant Governor of Ontario Award for Volunteerism, the 125th Anniversary of Confederation medal and the 2011 Junior League of Hamilton/Burlington Sustainer of the Year Award for community service. In addition, she was a member of the founding boards of the Hamilton Children’s Choir and French Language Education resulting in the institution of the French Immersion program by the Hamilton School Boards. Dr. Dent joins Dr. John Byl and Dr. David Koyzis as Redeemer faculty members who have been awarded the medal. The entire Redeemer community congratulates Dr. Dent on this honour.
