The Sciences Division at Redeemer hosted its Ninth Biennial Science Fair on April 11 and 12, showcasing the work of more than 50 Christian elementary schools across Ontario. Students in grades 7 and 8 developed a range of experiments and reports at their individual schools this winter, and the best of those were displayed at Redeemer. Those projects were reviewed and graded by a panel of judges which included alumni, students and faculty of Redeemer’s sciences division. Awards were given out in a number of categories, such as Study, Physical Science, Innovation, Experiment, Life Science and Technical Science. The Custance Foundation also sponsored awards for those projects which exemplified a Christian Perspective in Science. Winners for each of the categories can be found on the Science Fair webpage. John Knox Christian School (Oakville), John Calvin School (Smithville), and Trinity Christian School (Burlington) were the top three schools in this year’s fair. Besides the judging, the Science Fair also featured a number of science-related presentations for the participants and their families and guests. The Fair opened with “Antics with Atoms” presented by Dr. Henry Brouwer, Professor Emeritus of Chemistry and Environmental Science, a lively look at the chemical elements and involves a variety of fascinating chemical demonstrations. There was also a public Open House to allow students to “show off” their projects. The Science Fair Committee would like to thank the sponsors of this year’s fair, Affinity Biologicals, Inc. and Trojan Technologies, and The Arthur Custance Centre for Science and Christianity for providing prizes and judges for the Arthur Custance Award for Christian Perspective in Science. Several alumni of the Science Division — Aart Smit, Chrystle Numa and Hobbe Smit — also deserve thanks for their computing contributions to the fair. Congratulations to all the participants.
