Psalm 104: 15-16: He makes grass grow for the cattle, and plants for people to cultivate- bringing forth food from the earth: wine that gladdens human hearts, oil to make their faces shine, and bread that sustains their hearts.

As some one who likes to garden, this is one of my favourite times of year. The sun gets brighter, the days get longer, and I start to plant seeds that will eventually be transplanted into our garden. It is a time of planning, waiting, and anticipation.

God’s creation is beautiful, it brings me peace when I interact with it, and has things to teach me when I am willing to listen. As I garden, I am reminded of God’s love for me – how he has created and faithfully upholds a world with sun and rain, air and soil. These are all parts of complex systems that allow plants to grow, and us to eat.

In late February our family made its annual pilgrimage to William Dam Seeds in Waterdown. Soon we will witness God’s faithfulness yet again as winter turns to spring and then to summer, and garden plants begin to yield their harvests. Thanks be to God, who provides for us in a remarkable way that gladdens and sustains our hearts.

For Your Reflection:

  1. How do you encounter God in creation?
  2. What do you learn about God from creation?
