David Sweet, Member of Parliament for Ancaster-Dundas-Flamborough-Westdale and Sophia Aggelonitis, M.P.P. for Hamilton Mountain announced today that Redeemer University College will be receiving $599,974 in funding for its Community Soccer Project. The federal and Ontario governments have each contributed equal amounts towards this project. The funds are designated for a $910,000 project to replace the natural grass on Redeemer’s soccer field with an artificial turf surface and to install lights, bleachers and fencing. Redeemer’s application was made in partnership with the Ancaster Soccer Club (ASC), which will work with Redeemer to raise the remaining $310,000 and will have access to the field for the many community programs it operates. “We are pleased that we could partner with ASC to better serve our students and our community through this project,” noted Dr. Justin Cooper, President of Redeemer University College. “The upgraded soccer field will allow for increased use by Redeemer and the ASC, both of whom are facing challenges trying to meet the demands placed on existing facilities.” This award also marks another breakthrough. In May, Redeemer received capital funding from the federal government for the first time; today’s announcement marks the first time Redeemer has received provincial capital funding for a campus project. “We are very grateful to the federal and provincial governments for this important investment in our students and the community at large,” said Dr. Cooper. This is one of 12 investments in the Hamilton area totaling almost $10.5 million under the Recreational Infrastructure Canada program in Ontario (RInC Ontario) and Recreation Ontario (Ontario REC) that were announced today. Construction on the project will commence once the remaining funds are in place and the Redeemer Board has given its approval.
