Kyla DeHaan, a third-year International Development and Environmental Studies major from New Argyle PEI, is the Au Sable Institute of Environmental Studies’ Calvin B. DeWitt Leadership Fellowship recipient for 2015.

The DeWitt Fellowship recognizes both superior academic achievement and leadership in creation care. Kyla has been exercising those gifts in Hamilton, including the development of a program that allowed a food bank to better serve individuals from different cultures.

Kyla intends to become active in agricultural missions, and will be taking courses at Au Sable’s Pacific Rim Campus this year. At Pacific Rim, located on Whidbey Island, Washington, Kyla will be taking Ecological Agriculture with Dr. Ron Vos (Dordt College, Iowa) and International Development and Environmental Sustainability with Dr. Michael Ferber (The King’s University, Alberta). Kyla chose these courses because as she puts it “I love agriculture and want to gain practical skills on how to sustainably use it to benefit the environment and communities around the world.”

More information about Kyla and her award can be found on Au Sable’s website.

The Au Sable Institute of Environmental Studies offers environmental science programs for students and adults of all ages. Its academic program offers field-based, university-level courses in environmental studies and environmental science at campuses in the Great Lakes region (Mancelona, MI), Pacific Northwest (Whidbey Island, WA), South India (Thiruchirapalli, Tamil Nadu), and Latin America (Vara Blanca, Costa Rica) with academic credit offered by more than 50 colleges and universities.

Redeemer is a proud sponsor of Au Sable, and the programs it offers are some of Redeemer’s most popular off-campus study programs.
