A trio of Redeemer University College business students competed in the annual CPA Challenge sponsored by the Chartered Professional Accountants of Ontario on January 31, 2015. Ninety-nine contenders—33 teams of three—from 23 post-secondary programs competed at the CPA Ontario offices in Toronto. Redeemer’s representatives were business student Trevor DeWeerd and honours accounting students Alexandra Wouda and Kylie Barnes. Kevin Rowaan, another honours accounting student and Redeemer’s representative on the CPA Board of Ambassadors, organized Redeemer’s participation in the competition. CPA Challenge competitors were encouraged to use CPA skills, such as communications, teamwork, leadership, negotiation and time management. But there were many other benefits for the students as well. “The CPA Challenge fits right in with my program. It was a great opportunity to meet other students with the same career plans and especially professionals with experiences I can learn from. It was a lot of fun!” said Wouda, who plans to pursue CPA designation post-graduation. York University took home first place, and McMaster University took second.
