The Position

Do you have a heart for nurturing young people’s gifts in music and worship? Do you have an innovative vision for leading a Music and Worship Program – a vision that strives for excellence while meeting the needs of today’s generation of students? Redeemer University invites applications for a tenure-track position (open rank) in Music and Worship beginning July 2024. Candidates must be aligned with and passionate about Redeemer’s Christian mission of integrating faith in teaching, research, and professional practice. Candidates should possess a PhD or DMA and have a research program and/or professional practice and accomplishments appropriate to their career stage. The ideal candidate will have a demonstrated record (or show potential) of excellence in undergraduate teaching, along with experience leading and supervising an academic program.

Responsibilities

The successful candidate will teach courses that serve the Music and Worship Program. The ideal candidate will also supervise and lead the program with a keen interest in moving it forward. We are seeking an individual with an academic and practice background in worship music and a performance area (e.g., keyboard, voice, strings), a person who is passionate about and can think innovatively about worship music and music education.

Preferred Skills and Attributes

  • An ability and desire to teach a wide variety of courses in areas such as foundations of worship, worship music leadership, church music history, and worship music production;
  • An interest in supervising students doing internships and recitals/presentations;
  • An ability and desire to do research in a music-worship related field;
  • A familiarity with philosophies of and theological approaches to worship and specifically to worship music;
  • A familiarity with pedagogical approaches to leading church music;
  • An active performance career in a worship-music related field;
  • An ability to manage an academic program, supervise adjunct instructors, and help the program achieve its full potential;
  • A desire to serve the community (Redeemer, the church, and beyond) with the blessing of music (including through intersection with the chapel program).

The Application Process

As a liberal arts and sciences university rooted in the Reformed tradition of Christianity, we seek candidates committed to this framework. Applicants should submit a letter of application, curriculum vitae, evidence of teaching quality, and the names of three individuals who have agreed to provide letters of reference should the applicant advance to a later stage of the process.

In addition to these materials, applicants must include a 1-page to 2-page document describing their own Christian faith commitment and practice, its alignment with Redeemer’s mission and its impact on their academic and professional work. A range of qualifications will be evaluated, including distinguishing characteristics that demonstrate congruence with Redeemer’s identity as a university in the Protestant and particularly Reformed Christian tradition.

The position is open until filled. Only applicants selected for an interview will be contacted.

Redeemer University offers equal employment opportunities to qualified applicants. In accordance with Canadian Immigration requirements, Canadian citizens and permanent residents will be considered first for this position.
