It’s easy for Christians to ignore the Book of Judges. It contains bizarre stories, violence and extreme behaviour by modern standards. What can Judges possibly teach us about our Christian calling and purpose in the 21st century? The simple answer is, quite a bit if we have ears to hear. By considering Israel’s call as a people distinct from — but for the sake of — the nations and their failure in fulfilling that calling, Christians today can more clearly discern our calling and the trappings that prevent us from living it out.
