About
Steven Decoster is a part-time instructor in geography at Redeemer. He grew up in Flanders’ fields, only a few kilometers from where John McCrae wrote his famous poem. He obtained an M.Sc. in Bio-Engineering Sciences and a teaching degree at Ghent University. Before moving to Canada in 2014, he worked for 20 years as a geography instructor in Belgium, which also gave him the opportunity to take students on field trips all over Europe. He co-authored the Geo/Geoscoop textbook series (published by Plantyn) which was widely used in Flanders. His research interests primarily relate to the use of geographic information systems and remote sensing in agriculture. Recently he was part of a research team investigating agriculture monitoring at higher spatial and temporal resolutions using Sentinel-2 open-source satellite imagery. He lives in Hamilton with his wife Debbie, who is pastor at Little Bethel Community Church, and their two children. He enjoys exploring Canada, nature, soccer, disc golf, and making music.
