Scholarship Name Description Eligible Programs
Student Senate Award

Established by the Redeemer University Student Senate, up to five scholarships valued at $1,000 each will be awarded to full-time incoming or returning Redeemer students who demonstrate active participation within the Redeemer community and in the greater Hamilton community. Applicants must submit with their application a list of their extracurricular activities and local volunteer participation. Applicants must not be current Student Senate members or officers. The applicants will be ranked in a blind review conducted by the Student Senate, and the Academic Standards Committee will select the recipients on the recommendation of the Financial Aid Office.

Student Service Award (The)

Two awards of $500, funded by Rosa Flora Growers Limited, will be awarded annually to returning full-time students, one male and one female, who best exemplify qualities of service and leadership within Redeemer activities and/or in the broader community. The recipients would be actively involved in, but not limited to, Athletics, Theatre Arts, or external outreach missions, and would show a good spirit and heart for others. Interested students must submit with their application a short essay highlighting their activities and clearly describing how they are involved. The Student Life Department will rank the applicants and the Academic Standards Committee will select the recipients.

SunLight Foundation Leadership Scholarship (The)

Four scholarships valued at $1,750 each will be awarded annually to full-time returning students with a cumulative grade point average of 9.00 or better who have demonstrated that they are visionary leaders with commitment and talent. The recipients will have a holistic and transformational view about scholarship and their future career. Students must have financial need to qualify. Interested students must submit with their application a one-page statement describing their leadership activities, their view of scholarship and their career plans. The Student Life Department will rank the applicants.

SunLight Foundation Music Scholarship (The)

Each year, two scholarships of $1,500 each will be awarded to full-time incoming students who have a good academic record and intend to major in music at Redeemer. Applicants must submit the following along with their application for admission to Redeemer: a resume of their music experience; an essay describing why they wish to study music at a Christian university; and two letters of recommendation. They will be required to do a competitive audition with the Music Department of Redeemer. The essay and the letters of recommendation must be submitted by February 28th. The Music Department will rank the candidates.

Therese Comtois Dufresne Memorial Music Award (The)

This $2,000 award is funded by Jim and Annette Ray in honour of Thérèse Comtois Dufresne, who led a faith-filled life and was the beloved mother of Annette Dufresne Ray. The award will be granted annually to a student enrolled full-time as a major in Music. The recipient must have a minimum cumulative and departmental grade point average of 7.00, and demonstrate financial need. Priority will be given first to students from the Hamilton-Wentworth region and then to students from across Canada. Preference will be given to students who intend to pursue graduate studies in Music. The Music Department will rank the applicants.

Thesaurous tou Theou (Treasuries of God) Scholarship

Each year, a scholarship of up to $2,000 will be awarded to a third or fourth year student majoring in Politics and International Studies to encourage and reward excellence in academic achievement. The recipient must have a high grade point average in departmental courses, have achieved excellence in written work, and have made serious contributions to class discussions. When two equally strong candidates meet these criteria, financial need may be considered. The History, Politics and International Studies Department will rank the applicants. In any year in which there are no suitable applicants from the History, Politics and International Studies Department, the award is to be made to a student from a related field (e.g. Applied Social Sciences) following criteria analogous to those given above.

Universities Canada Entrance Awards

Students are eligible to apply for the Universities Canada Entrance Awards by virtue of their parent’s employment with the relevant donor companies. All awards are tenable for any recognized full-time degree course at any Canadian university or college which is a member of Universities Canada. Candidates must have obtained a minimum average of 70% in each of the last two years of secondary school. More information

Van Belle Bursaries for BC Students

The Van Belle family is committed to supporting students from British Columbia who wish to receive a Christian university education. A series of bursaries up to or exceeding $5,000 per award will be awarded annually to incoming or returning students who demonstrate financial need and are permanent residents of BC. The recipients must be full-time students in good academic standing

VanderKlippe Mission & Service Award (The)

Two awards of $1,000 will be awarded each year to students entering their third or fourth year who have demonstrated active involvement in their community. The applicant will seek a future of living missionally and serving those in need wherever they are placed in the world. This award is open to students from the following majors: Politics and International Studies, Urban and Intercultural Ministry and Applied Social Sciences. In a letter of application, the student will relate how community service and missional commitment are a part of their life, including what their future aspirations are. The recipients must be in good academic standing and demonstrate financial need.  Interested students must submit with their application a one-page statement detailing how they have been active in their community and how they aspire to live missionally.

Vandermarel Young Life Canada Award (The)

This award is established by Bill and Marta Vandermarel to recognize the contributions of Redeemer students to Young Life Canada. Up to three awards a year, valued at $1,000 each, will be given to students who actively participate in the ministry of Young Life Canada during the academic year. Applicants must submit with their application a description of their involvement with Young Life Canada and an endorsement by a Young Life Canada representative. The Student Life Department will rank the applicants and the Academic Standards Committee will select the recipients.

When is the deadline to apply for financial aid?

For Fall intake, the deadline to apply for financial aid and the Christian Leadership Scholarship is February 28 (for maximum consideration).

What if I have missed the priority funding application deadline?

If there is funding available after the first round, late financial aid applications will be taken into consideration during the second round of funding.

I am a mature student. Am I still eligible for financial aid?

Yes, please complete the financial aid application located on your student portal to see what you are eligible for.

Where can I find a full list of tuition and fees?

A full listing of the fees that are required for the 2023-2024 academic year can be found on the Tuition and Fees page. It does not include books (estimated at $300 to $600 per term) or personal items. Fees for the academic year can also be found in the Academic Calendar.

How do I apply for financial aid at Redeemer University?

Is a bursary different from a scholarship?

Yes. Bursaries are based on financial need. Scholarships require that you meet certain criteria (which may include minimum GPA, specific major or area of study, extracurricular activities, leadership, etc.). All students can apply for both bursaries and scholarships as long as they meet the listed criteria.

Can I apply for more than one scholarship/bursary? Is there a limit?

There is no limit. You can apply for both scholarships and bursaries, provided you meet the criteria listed. There is, however, no guarantee that you will receive every award for which you have applied. In addition, Redeemer does not offer full-ride scholarships.

Does Redeemer offer full-ride scholarships?

Redeemer is committed to offering affordable tuition and to helping students match with any awards for which they are eligible. Full-ride scholarships are not currently offered.

How am I assessed for scholarships and bursaries with a GPA requirement as a secondary school applicant?

Secondary school applicants (students entering directly from secondary school with no previous post-secondary education) will be assessed on their admission average at Grade 12 midyear time, and again at the end of Grade 12 based on the Ontario curriculum scale.

How am I assessed for scholarships and bursaries with a GPA requirement as a GAP year applicant?

Students who have taken one or two years off after secondary school or who have attended a discipleship or gap year program (that is not eligible for post-secondary credit), will be assessed on their admission average calculated from their final secondary school transcript based on the Ontario curriculum scale. Students who receive post-secondary credit for their gap-year program are subject to the eligibility criteria as outlined by Scholarship Consideration for Incoming Transfer Students. Students admitted as mature students are not eligible for academic scholarships under this policy.

How am I assessed for scholarships and bursaries with a GPA requirement as a transfer student applicant?

For students transferring directly from a recognized undergraduate university institution, scholarships will be awarded based on the grade point average of the last year (two terms) of full-time studies (minimum of four courses a term) based on the Ontario curriculum scale. Transfer students are also evaluated for the Automatic Entrance Scholarships at admission.

When will my financial aid be applied to my student account?

Most financial aid is posted to the student account approximately two weeks prior to the start of the semester, provided that all documents are completed.

What happens if I am not taking a full course load?

To receive the full value of any award, a student must be enrolled in a minimum of 4 courses (12 credit hours) in each term. A student who has received an award and enrolls in a course load of 3 courses (9 credit hours) in one term will receive the award on a prorated basis (i.e. enrolment in 3 courses would result in 60% of the award total) unless otherwise stated in the conditions of the specific award. Award proration on courses dropped after the term has started will follow the tuition and fees refund schedule in the Academic Calendar.

Even with financial aid, I won’t be able to pay my tuition fees. Are there any other ways I can fund my courses?

Yes. There are paid jobs on campus which may help fund your education. Our Career Centre can also actively help you find access to paid internships and other opportunities in the local area.

If I am taking a gap year am I still eligible to receive Redeemer scholarships and bursaries?

Yes, you are still eligible to apply for scholarships/bursaries when you apply to Redeemer. You may be excluded from certain scholarships based on donor criteria, but there are many others for which you would be eligible.
