Final Assessment Report: Mathematics Program Review

As part of Redeemer’s institutional quality assurance process, the Department of Mathematics completed a self‐study report of the Mathematics programs (one honours majors, one four-year major, one general major and a minor) in October 2019. A review team composed of two external and one internal reviewer performed an online visit over two days in January, 2021(due to covid restrictions) with students, faculty, relevant support staff and senior administration. The team subsequently submitted a final External Reviewers’ Report on April 9, 2021.

The review team praised the Mathematics programs for its excellent instruction, selection of course offerings often found only in larger institutions, strong alignment with the mission of the university, number of undergraduate student research opportunities funded by NSERC grants, and exceptional attention to the philosophy and history of math that reinforces the Christian perspective of the institution. Areas for improvement include providing opportunities for increased interaction with faculty and students at nearby universities, improving program-level assessment and distilling learning outcomes to a more manageable number that can be more readily tracked.

The Mathematics program faculty and administration have carefully considered the External Reviewers’ Report and prepared a concrete plan, with a timeline, to strengthen the program in response to the recommendations. This plan has been approved by the Academic Quality Assurance Committee and Redeemer’s Senate.
