Executive Summary Report for the review of the Philosophy program – 2022/2023

As part of Redeemer’s institutional quality assurance process, the Philosophy faculty completed a Self‐Study Report of the Philosophy programs in September 2022. A review team composed of two external and one internal reviewer performed a visit on March 10, 2023, meeting with students, faculty, and relevant support staff and senior administration. The review team submitted a final External Reviewers’ Report on April 10, 2023.

The reviewers commended the program for its well-organized program and courses, along with the dedicated and versatile primary faculty in the program; the collaborations between faculty and students have led to significant publication opportunities for Philosophy students. The strong graduate-program enrolment numbers from Philosophy graduates were also noted appreciatively. They saw opportunities for program growth through the use of additional qualified faculty from outside the program who could bolster the program and provide additional voices and perspectives to Philosophy students. The reviewers also suggested that some courses could be strengthened though by incorporating additional primary-source readings into the readings.

Based on their Response, approved on September 14, 2023, the Philosophy faculty and Redeemer administration have carefully considered the External Reviewers’ Report and prepared a concrete plan, with a timeline, to strengthen the program in response to the recommendations. This plan has been approved by the Academic Quality Assurance Committee and Redeemer’s Senate.
